Rough the Type: A Scary and Serious Display Font

As a brand designer, I recently had the chance to test Rough the Type in a realistic branding project. Dusan “Dustin” Jelesijevic crafted this font with a unique vision: to be both "scary" and "serious" at the same time. The result is a display font that exudes a distinct punk-rock and horror vibe, perfect for projects that need a bold, edgy touch.

Rough the Type for Edgy Brand Identity Projects

When I first opened my blank brand board, I was curious to see how Rough the Type would perform. The font's jagged edges and rough texture immediately caught my eye. It has a strong, almost aggressive personality that can make a powerful statement. I started by testing it on a logo concept for a local café that wanted a refresh. The font’s bold, unconventional style perfectly captured the café’s new, more daring image.

Rough the Type in Logo Design and Brand Boards

One of the key strengths of Rough the Type is its ability to stand out in logo design. The font’s unique, hand-drawn feel adds a personal, almost rebellious touch. When I placed it on the brand board, it immediately became the focal point, drawing attention and setting the tone for the entire visual identity. This font is ideal for brands that want to break away from the norm and make a bold, memorable impression.

Rough the Type for Creative Packaging and Product Labels

Next, I moved on to packaging design. I created a mockup for a skincare product line that aimed to appeal to a younger, more adventurous audience. Rough the Type added an edgy, modern twist to the labels. The font’s rough, textured look complemented the natural, organic ingredients, creating a balance between rugged and refined. It’s a great choice for products that need to stand out on the shelf and grab the attention of trendsetters.

Rough the Type in Social Media Graphics and Web Design

In today’s digital age, social media and web design are crucial for brand visibility. I tested Rough the Type on an Instagram post and a website header. The font’s bold, distinctive style made the content pop, especially when used in short, impactful phrases. For a creative studio or a handmade shop, Rough the Type can help create a strong, consistent brand presence across all digital platforms.

Rough the Type as a Supporting Typeface in Editorial Design

While Rough the Type shines as a display and headline font, it can also work well as a supporting typeface in editorial design. I used it for section headers and pull quotes in a magazine layout. The font’s unique character added a dynamic, engaging element to the pages, making the content more visually interesting. However, it’s important to note that Rough the Type may not be the best choice for long body text or formal corporate use, where readability and professionalism are paramount.

Practical Tips for Using Rough the Type in Branding

Before using Rough the Type in final client work, it’s essential to test it thoroughly. Consider the context and the message you want to convey. Pair it with a clean, sans serif font for a balanced, professional look. Also, check the commercial font licensing to ensure it’s suitable for your specific needs, whether it’s for brand identity, packaging, templates, merchandise, websites, digital products, or print-on-demand products.

In conclusion, Rough the Type is a versatile and impactful display font that can add a unique, edgy flair to a wide range of design projects. Its bold, scary, and serious style makes it a standout choice for those looking to make a strong, memorable impression.
